You step out of the shower and your skin already feels tight.
You put on lotion. Ten minutes later it is gone. By afternoon your shins itch, your forearms feel rough, and your face feels like paper. You have tried three creams. None of them held.
This is one of the most common menopause skin complaints, and the cream is not the problem.
Why menopause skin gets dry and itchy
Estrogen helps your skin make oil and hold water. When estrogen drops, the outer layer of your skin loses its seal. Water escapes faster. The American Academy of Dermatology says skin loses some of its ability to hold water during menopause.
Your skin also gets thinner, and its pH shifts around age 50. That makes it more sensitive, so soaps, fragrance, and even products you have used for years can sting or itch.
Why lotion stops working
Lotion adds moisture to the surface. It cannot rebuild the barrier or the layer under it that estrogen supported. So the moisture leaves as fast as you put it on.
What helps dry, itchy menopause skin
- Use lukewarm water, not hot, and keep showers short.
- Switch to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
- Apply moisturizer within three minutes of drying off, while skin is still damp.
- Choose a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.
- Wear SPF 30 or higher every morning.
If your skin still itches after a few weeks of this, get it checked. Persistent itch can come from your hormones, your thyroid, or another medical cause, and I want you to know which.
What treats the cause
When dryness comes from low estrogen, hormone therapy can help your skin hold water again. It is prescribed for menopause symptoms and is not right for everyone, so I review your history first. PRP and skin boosters, performed by our aesthetic physician associates, can then add moisture and support collagen from the inside out.
